The report "Technology Trends: Future Transportation" published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) systematically examines the global patent landscape of four main modes of transportation: land, sea, air, and space. Among them, land transportation technology patent activity is the most active, with over 900,000 patent families publicly disclosed as of 2023, making it the largest patent field among the four modes. Land Transportation: Dual Drivers of Sustainability and Digitalization

Land transportation encompasses roads and railways, accounting for the major share of global transportation carbon emissions. The report points out that sustainable propulsion and digitalization are the two major trends driving transformation in this field. In terms of sustainable propulsion, technologies such as pure electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and e-fuels have attracted much attention. In terms of digitalization, artificial intelligence optimizes navigation, sensors enhance safety, and cloud platforms enable data management, but at the same time, cybersecurity challenges are becoming increasingly prominent.

Patent Landscape: Asia Dominates, Chinese Companies Rise Rapidly

In terms of inventor geography, Asia contributes over 76% of land transportation patent families, with China and Japan together accounting for more than 60%. Despite China's rapid development in recent years, the main patent holders remain predominantly Japanese, German, and American companies. Among the top ten, Japanese companies occupy six positions, with Toyota leading with more than 37,000 patent families, covering multiple pathways from electric to hydrogen fuel. Germany's Bosch and Volkswagen, as well as America's General Motors and Ford, are also among the top.

Technology Hotspots: Sustainable Propulsion and Communication Security

Since 2000, the cumulative patent families in the sustainable propulsion field have approached 500,000, and communication security has exceeded 310,000, making both key focuses of land transportation patent portfolios. Automation and circular economy, and human-machine interface patents are relatively fewer in number, but with similar growth rates. The report also shows that Israel stands out in communication security, while Japan and South Korea are more focused on sustainable propulsion.

Looking Ahead

Vehicle intelligence and automation represent the direction forward, but large-scale autonomous driving still requires supporting infrastructure and regulations. In emerging markets, such as electric tricycles in the Philippines, electric motorcycle taxis in Kenya, and the battery-swapping model in the Taiwan region, all demonstrate locally adapted innovation. As emission reduction pressures intensify, patent innovation will continue to reshape the future transportation landscape.
